Karianne believes that public safety is a vital role of government. She is grateful to those who put their lives on the line in our armed forces and in our local and state police forces.
The legislature has visited some tough issues over the past few years. Scaling back penalties for certain offenses, grand jury amendments, asset forfeiture, police body camera provisions, and other issues have been at the forefront.
In the last decade, the Utah prison population grew 23%. Statistically, eight of the top 10 offenses at the time of admission to prison over the past decade were for nonviolent crimes. Utah’s prison population is increasing at a rate over 6 times the national average. The length of stay is increasing for all offenders.
Further, there were 14% fewer crimes reported in Utah than a decade ago.
